I just don’t see what’s wrong with this self defense video, aside from the 80’s styles. Maybe you need to take a few self defense courses and then comment..
I’ve practised Ninjutsu for about 3 years now and these techniques being shown have a lot in common with some of the core teachings.
The principles are the same, in that you’re attacking the weakest parts of your opponents body. Effective if you want to avoid getting stuck in a punching match or messy grappling.
Point of interest – At 3:52, the technique being demonstrated is called ‘Omote Gyaku Henka’ according to Ninjutsu.
Some of those aren’t bad against an untrained person trying to grapple, but suggesting they’re going to cause the Gracie family any grief is laughable.
No self respecting wrestler is going to grab you by the throat like that, It ties up both hands and jiu jitsu has about 100 million defenses to it, at least one of which you will probably learn in your first BJJ lesson. That said, the finger poke isn’t a bad comeback.
The guy doing the takedown and the guy defending against it are utterly clueless about how an effective double leg shoot actually works, or that it can be set up with strikes. You’d think these idiots would do a little research?
That “sweep” is easily countered by moving to sidemount, halfway to getting his back. From there he cant roll back into you again, and the “deadly knife hand” he throws is an invitation for the guy to armbar you silly.
There are better postures to fight with your feet from on the ground.
And yeah, that is about the weirdest moustache I’ve ever seen. That guy would want to be REALLY good at self defence or have a high tolerance for ridicule.
20 years kung fu, eight years Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Agreed, a lot of the techniques in this video are valid. They might seem strange to some, but they work. The only thing negative about this video is that some of the moves aren’t really that practical, and are difficult to achieve in a real world situation. That one finger choke for example might work when a guy is standing still and you are prepared for him to choke you. But then again, it seems like they give you alternatives like the ‘ball flurries’. A minus (would be a plus if everyone had awesome ‘stashes).
The one finger choke is great for trying to end a fight as non-violently as possible. Otherwise, why not just bean the guy (or, of course, ball flurries)?
And yes, I can only hope that the comment about the Gracie family was not in the original film, and was in jest. I don’t know what spitting soda in someone’s eyes has to do with BJJ…
This is actually pretty good martial advice. Might look strange, but its solid technique.

That was actually pretty good and usable advise. What did you expect, flying Ninjas?

“Ball Flurries”? Sheesh … it’s “Monkey steals the peach” time …

Although that mustache is a crime against humanity, a lot of these moves are very practical and effective. Far from the worst self defense video.

I have been doing Krav Maga for almost a year now. We use some of the techniques shown in the video although not exactly the same.
Some of these moves are valid and effective.

Have you opened your website in FF? The comments look terrible… they cannot be read at all. I am using FF3 on WinXP
Cya!
